BOOK SYNOPSIS

Sanjaya Lall of Oxford University was one of the most influential contributors to the discipline of development economics. He always sought to use evidence as the basis for framing theory as well as policy design, free from the constraints of ideology and conventional approaches. This book, written in his honour, follows in his footsteps and develops his central proposition that economic development reflects the capacity of an economy to build technological capabilities. The book also demonstrates that moving an economy out of poverty requires a combination of private initiative and intelligent government policies. Academics and policy makers who want to understand how and why some poor countries have risen out of poverty will most certainly find inspiration in this book.
